Art Students Bring the Past Back to Life

They did more than refurbish an old painting. The dozen students working in Frederiksted Saturday afternoon were reviving a bit of Crucian culture and shining up the island's image.
You night have passed it dozens of times and hardly noticed it as you walked down King Street in Frederiksted, a fading mural with dim colors, paint flaking.
Well, not anymore.
Now the colors are so vibrant they practically jump off the wall at you, the street scene vivid and alive. Kids play, women shop and talk, clouds mount up in the distance as a sailboat plies the sea in the background. It's a St. Croix that used to be, captured in the memories of those who painted the scene more than three decades ago.
The transformation of the old mural on the wall outside the Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts is courtesy of St. Croix Central High School's National Art Honor Society. Under the direction of their teachers, Niarus Benjamin Walker and Kristin Duncan, about a dozen students came together to bring life back to the mural painted 36 years ago by other students, now long grown up. And while today's young artists hope their work lasts as long, they had an impact even before they'd finished.
Tourists off the cruise ship docked nearby stopped to admire their work and take pictures. One was so impressed she gave Benjamn a cash donation for the program.
"This is phenomenal," said Nancy Maher of Frederick, Md., who made the donation. "I'm very glad to see these kids doing this. ... This is a fine reflection on your island."

The mural was originally painted in 1975, long before the building became an art museum. Students from the Claude O. Markoe Elementary School, which in that time was a first through eighth grade school, did the mural as a school project under the direction of Trudi Gilliam and Sandy Zierdt. It was touched up once in 1998.
Jason Rames, who happened by the work Saturday, was a student at Markoe then, and while he wasn't part of the painting project, he said several friends were.
Rames was driving down King Street and saw the activity, and had to pull over, get out and double back to watch.
"This is really great," he said.
The mural long predates the museum, which opened in 2003. At the time the mural was painted, Rames remembered, the building was vacant and the wall "was just a wall."
Refurbishing the mural is a community service project for the art students. Saturday was actually the third afternoon spent working on the mural, Duncan said. The students had washed it down and put a sealant on it. Saturday at 1 p.m. they started scraping it with wire brushes to knock off any further loose paint and to scratch up the surface so new paint would adhere to it.
Then they got to work with the brushes. First they had to mix the paints to get exactly the right shades of color. Then carefully, consulting often with their teachers, they tried to recreate the scene exactly as it had been painted 36 years ago.
By 4 p.m. the change was startling, and the colors once again popped as they must have back in the 1970s.
"It feels great to be reviving something like this," said Claynelle Gordon, a 15-year-old sophomore at Central High. She was especially pleased with the reaction. "You're doing something and the adults are actually with us."
Benjamin said the project is part of Youth Art Month, and is sponsored by the V.I. Council of the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Common Ground Part 2

As you may know Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts is gearing up for the second edition of the Common Ground project, which will be led again this year by Kendal Henry of NY who will be in residence at CMCA from Feb. 22 to March 5th - he will be available from Feb. 23 through March 4th to conduct workshops and meet with individuals and groups interested in the Common Ground project which intends to spur revitalization of F'sted and outlying areas while also identifying the historic and social importance of these areas through a consensus of participants.

Edwin Austin Abbey Mural Workshop Fellowship

The Abbey Mural Workshop is a unique opportunity for selected artists to learn how to successfully compete for public art mural commissions. The emphasis is on two-dimensional work that grows out of the mural tradition. Participants will meet professionals working in the public art field through workshop lectures, demonstrations, and critiques. The workshop culminates in a month-long exhibition of the final mural designs at the National Academy. Past artists have gone on to secure commissions and install public art projects across the country.

The Workshop is taught by Grace Graupe-Pillard, who has been working with the Academy for the last several years. Grace is an experienced and enthusiastic artist with a breadth of public art experience in New York City and New Jersey.

Past lecturers include Will Barnet, Richard Haas, Joyce Kozloff, Ellen Lanyon, and Dorothea Rockburne, to name a few.

Participants will receive a one-time stipend of $1200.

The workshop will begin July 6 and end July 30, 2010. It is an intensive workshop—classes are held from 9:00am to 5:00pm every weekday. Participants are responsible for their own housing, transportation, materials, and related expenses.

Project: Cruzians selected ceramic skin-toned
talismans to represent themselves; then placed them
upon a symbolic landscape. Hatfield completed with
hand-made landscape-toned tiles.

Results: Participants filled hilltops with all colors;
where actually, wealthy Caucasians dwell. In general,
people see themselves as more mixed & unified; less divided
than the U.S. government designations.

Special Project: Jersey Barrier Design Request for Proposal

NYCDOT, in partnership with the Mayor's Community Affairs Unit (CAU) and New York Cares, a local not-for-profit organization, that mobilizes New Yorkers in volunteer service, is launching an initiative to improve the appearance of jersey barriers at specific locations throughout the Boroughs.

NYCDOT invites artists and designers to submit designs to be painted directly onto a number of selected barriers on-site or in storage. After leaving St. Croix 25 years ago, I've always wondered what it would be like to go back. I had no family there and I'd lost contact with most of the friends I'd made in school, so didn't expect much of a reception. So therefore, I want to thank you all for making my return home so special and memorable. Thank you Barbara and Celeste, Carolyn and Jordon and Helen and Charlene. Thank you Lisa, Monica and Cynthia. Thank you Cindy. Thank you Edgar. Thank you Yemaya. Thank you Dr. Hall and Cleo and Thank you Ms. Francis. Thank you Mike and thank your daughter who's name escapes me. THE ARTIST DOVE

Dove's artwork captivates the spirit of Frederiksted. As a young girl I remember sitting with him and watching as he masterfully worked his craft as both accomplished self taught artist and hustler. These were the days when cruise ships abound and Dove catered to their sensibilities with a photo album chock full of his original oils of various genre scenes that he would reproduce on the spot. He bestowed an almost psychic memory of the downtown architectural landscape painting vivid aerial scenes that would leave one wondering if it was possible if he had actually flown over Frederiksted to create it. Dove never having left the island or been in a plane for that matter simply knew his town like the back of his hand. His is missed and today his memory lives on in a Dove scholarship awarded to a talented young Crucian artist every year.

DOVE

This is one of the places where DOVE painted for years. DOVE grew up in Frederiksted and became a self taught painter whose large, mostly architectural paintings of Frederiksted, and then Christiansted, were sought after by people from all walks of life. He died several years ago and is still missed, painting on the sidewalk where we all could watch the progress of the paintings. I loved his use of bright colors, of the buildings, people walking along the streets, or even parades marching down the street with every building and tree in its place. I wish I had bought one of his works before he passed.

TITI BREAD

This bakery is the site where our famous Titi bread was first baked. Now we can enjoy it in white or wheat. Ummmmm good, especially in the morning, open it up with your fingers and chuk it full with Danish brick cheese melting from the hot bread. A DREAM FULFILLED

I came to St. Croix for a week in February 2005, bought a little house seven days later and have returned every winter since. St Croix gives me coral reefs and forested mountains, a diversity of people and cultural life, artists, naturalists, craftsmen, fishermen and farmers. The ocean, where I swim every day is at the foot of my hill. I see where the sea meets the sky. I look out on eternity every day. I have found my island.

A painter and self styled exile of Dominica moves to Frederiksted and opens his business in a building that once housed the business of another self taught exile, Danish photographer, Axel Ovesen, who, too became a Crucian entrepreneur and Frederiksted figure. Adams County Government Center - Interior Courtyard Pieces

The Adams County Visual Arts Commission is conducting an open entry competition to select permanent, site specific public art, including three dimensional pieces, to be placed in two 30 X 60 foot interior courtyards flanking the main entrance of the new multi-million dollar Adams County Government Center. The Center is currently under construction at 124th and Sable Blvd., Brighton, Colorado and is due to open in the Spring of 2011. The art should reflect the background, history and future of Adams County, and should be appropriate for the function and location of the Complex. Submissions may be designed separately for each courtyard or may integrate both courtyards. The submissions may be original works or limited edition works with geographic restrictions. The courtyards sites will abut pedestrian corridors, but will not be accessible to the public. The 60 foot long corridor side walls will be floor to ceiling glass and two of the other courtyard walls will have large glass viewing windows from the level of approximately two feet off the ground. One of the short side walls and about one-half of the long back wall of each courtyard will be brick. The courtyards will be easily visible from the exterior of the building through glass walls on the outside of the pedestrian corridors. The courtyards will be in a one story area and open to the sky, but the works must not extend above the height of the interior walls. Works must require minimum maintenance as the courtyards will have only limited maintenance access. There will be limited power to the courtyards and no lighting. Artists are encouraged to submit a separate independent work intended for one of the courtyards, or an integrated work tying both courtyards together conceptually, or both. The Plaque!!

There was lots of discussion about what the plaque would look like with most of it centered around it's size. Like all aspects of a public art project, lots of practical issues has to be taken into account. With each size we weighed the pros and cons against what we wanted to present in a finished product. I played devil's advocate.

An 8.5 x 11.5 inch plaque would be visible across the street, easily read by everyone including those with poor eye sight. That size would allow for a long and detailed story. However, would people feel obligated to fill all that space? Dis it take away from the intimate relationship between the viewer and the plaque?

An oval plaque would be interesting but might be difficult to cut given the time and for those who wanted to add images, it wasn't the best option.

I advocated for a smaller plaque but with the help Carolyn and Jordon a plaque size was determined.

The plaque will be 6" high by 7" wide. It will be made out of Masonite and painted to look regal and important deserving of the information presented within it.

Central High!!

The collaborative team felt that it was important for this project to have a web presence. We came up with a way for people outside St. Croix to see the the information on the plaques and for the public to add their own virtual plaques. This will allow people in China and Australia and other parts of the world to read what makes St. Croix, St.Croix.

I came here with an empty but open mind. Knowing that I will have to collaborate on a public art project with whomever was interested in participating, whether they were artists or not. I was often asked what the project was or what form it would take and I always answered, "I don't know". And I really did not know. The project would come out of the people that were in the room and the surrounding community. The issues addressed in the ideas that the artists brought forth would evolve into a project along with the things I heard when I spoke to the people on the streets, or the things I saw when I took a stroll around the block. All those elements came together to make up the public art project titled Common Ground.

Common Grounds will consist of small plaques which will be placed around St. Croix. These plaques will create an intimate relationship between the viewer and the information on the plaque like having a one-on-one conversation. Not unlike the plaques that one might see on buildings of historic significance. However, our plaques will be different. They are about highlighting the hopes and dreams, history and experiences, loves and disappointments, trials and tribulations of individual in relation to a place. That place can be anywhere; from a building to a street corner, under a tree or a favorite bench or even the island in general. This is about giving the individual a voice, sharing some unknow or hidden history or highlighting events of significance that others might not be aware of. The plaques can be text or photography or a combination of both, drawings or hand written messages. Old folks and young ones, Blacks, Whites, locals and expats this is for everyone. Crucians are full of interesting stories. This project is about these stories and the people who tell them.

Celeste in deep discussion.

As expected the artists (those who are currently making art and those who conceptualize ideas) came up with many different public art ideas. The concept behind the discussion was to put any and all ideas out there, find a common theme, and hope something develops into a project or series of projects. It was obvious what inspired them from the previous day's slide show as most ideas involved projection. One of Celeste's many ideas included projecting some of the historic imagery on the exterior surface of the Fort as a way to entice locals and tourists alike to the Fort and provide a dose of the rich history that surrounds the structure. Her idea would use public art as an educational tool and PR for the Fort.

In a very different direction, Carolyn's idea involved working with the young people. The concept involved obtaining confiscated firing arms from the police, destroying them then using the pieces to build sculptures when will be displayed throughout the island. Similar project have been very successful in bringing attention and reduction in gun violence in many of the cities I've worked in especially when local government agencies collaborate with the artists.

The local architectural "ruins" inspired Janet's public art proposal. With the use of projection through the window openings of the once beautiful coral building, parts of what might have occupied those rooms return to haunt the crumbling structure.

The sixth graders Nyomi, Chadiya, Kiyarra, Anisha, Quianna had about 10-15 suggestions of what the public art should do which reminded the group that the younger artists-to-be had a voice as well.

Mike suggested a web presence while Barbara spoke passionately about the "invisible" people which ignighted issues that were on everyone's mind. Esh and La Vaughn discussed some strong ideas and concepts that were on their minds for a while which I hope they explain on this blog (hint, hint).

I was pleasant surprised that people did the homework. And to top it off there wasn't a bad idea in the bunch. I will go into detail about the ideas in another post but for now I wanted to thank everyone for participating so far. Some of the common themes revolved around the shared history, identity - particularly when it comes to self identification and "invisible" people.

What is Public Art - A Sampling

The project began with a slide show about public art. It covered various forms and expressions. Some of the projects were made out of expensive carbon materials while others, cheap garbage bags or masking tape. Some took up many city blocks while others were the size of a match stick. The slide show was meant to inspire and stimulate the creativity that I believe every one possesses. Everyone who attended was given homework- come in the next day with ideas or things that are on your mind that can be addressed through a public art project. Tomas Lanner said...: good day kendall and thanks for doing what you do. a few years ago i started painting the abandoned vehicles in my mary's fancy neighborhood on st croix to make people more aware of the trash they discard. i've been using left-over house paint and it has improved the look (and conscience) of our corner of the world. if frederiksted is the focus, there may be some junk cars up around the cemetery. if not cars, there's plenty of bottles, cans, paper plates that could be compiled into a larger piece to highlight our treatment of nature here. i hope the project goes well and receives good support.; December 30, 2009 4:58 AM

Less is More

The most difficult part of the this process is coming up with a concept or an idea that we think is worth the time and energy to creating a work of art around. Sometimes we as artists tend to get preachy in trying to get our message across by using complicated symbols and literature that becomes lost in translation. While your concepts are being marinaded in the creative juices that is your mind, think of the easiest way to communicate it. How would you explain it to a child or someone who doesn't speak the language. And do this without compromising the artistic merits of the artwork or watering down the message. Sometimes saying less is more.

Dan Witz, Signs: Rich, uses a single word posted outside an estate home to highlight the symbols and separation of class in a New York neighborhood.

A New York City parking sign is altered to relay a more accurate meaning of NYC's parking signs.

QUESTION: Can I Participate Even Though I Am Not An Artist

ANSWER: Yes

Right now we do not know what we are going to do in terms of a project(s). That will slowly (or quickly) materialize once a topic, site and audience is discussed. As always, the public is very important in creating public art and very often can be part of the art itself. Below is a video of Frozen Grand Central. About 200 ordinary people responded to a call over the web and invited to meet at a particular place at a particular time for instructions. The mission was to freeze in place for 5 minutes in the Main Concourse in Grand Central Terminal. The artwork was conceived by Charlie Todd and executed by non artists. The entire process from planning to execution tool less than an hour.

Where Do We Begin?

In preparing for this project, one way to begin is to start thinking about an issue that you want to communicate to the general public through an artwork. It could be something simple like the weather or something more in dept like a political opinion. It is important for each individual artist to select what he/she is passionate about. Start with the statement, "I want people to know________". Once that's determined, selecting a site and targeted audience along with factors such as time and budget will start to shape the public art project.

Michael Rakowitz's Para(sites) were created as a way to tackle one of the many issues faced by the homeless ; a warm place to sleep. He designed these shelters with each individual. The structures are made of plastic and are attached to the exhaust of buildings. The air from the exhausts provide warmth and a means of inflating the structures.

An artist collective in Berlin also responded to the homeless by providing these St. Michael Cathedrals in areas frequented by the homeless. St. Micheal is the patron Saint of the Homeless.

A homeless person can stick his head into the cardboard structure...

And be transformed to another place if only for a moment.

You might ask why bother? Why work this way?

Fact is there are about 400+ public art programs that commission artworks in the US that artists from Virgin Island are eligible for. Each of these agencies commission an average of 15 projects a year and project budgets range from $30,000 to $1 Million with most averaging at about $100,000. Public art commissions have provided many artist with an alternative to getting their work out there in lieu of pursuing gallery representation. The workshops, discussions, and conversations on this blog and the days in St. Criox will give artists the tools to help them compete for these commissions and in the process have new insight in their own art practices.

Getting Started: Public Art vs Art in Public Places

Lawrence Argent's I See What You Mean was created specifically for the Denver Convention Center. The artwork interaction with the architecture, it's scale and the reference to the local fauna makes it a great example of site-specific public art.

The Virgin Mother by Damien Hirst is a large provocative sculpture seen here in the Lever House exterior courtyard in NYC. This artwork was not created for that courtyard and is as appropriate in a gallery or museum as it is outside. This is a great example of Art in Public Spaces.

When most people thing about public art, they think of murals on exterior walls or sculptures in courtyards and street corners. Although these can be forms of public art, the truth of the matter is public art can take many forms. Even non-traditional art forms. But before I continue, I want to make a distinction between Public Art and Art in Public Places. Merely placing a sculpture outside to be enjoyed by the public does not necessarily make it public art. It becomes public art when that sculpture is created specifically for that space and takes into account the unique aspects of the surrounding environment (history, location, architecture, audience, to mention a few). In other words the difference between Public Art and Art in Public Places is site-specificity. It is not to say that one is more important than the other, I just wanted to be clear what I meant when I use the words public art.

This show will be on view Jan. 15th at the reception for Kendal Henry at CMCA from 6 to 8 PM - at 7 PM we will introduce Mr. Henry and have him give a brief talk about public art in general and the Common Ground project which will begin with the Sat. 10 AM meeting also at CMCA.

Nine artists from Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands present works that raise questions about complex issues facing us today in the Caribbean. Among the investigations being presented by the artists are Monica Marin's political piece, which focuses on the proposed Fox Woods Casino and the irony involved in the Indian development on what many view as Sacred Indian grounds. Norma Vila Rivero presents a poetic array of photos and an installation that deals with the migration of Puerto Ricans to the USA and migration in general in search of the “daily bread” of every day life. Donald Diddams' digitally painted photographs reference both the commonplace and the strange land we find ourselves in as we go about daily life. Diego Conde has and continues to document the lives of people who have migrated from Puerto Rico to the Virgin Islands. Lisa Ladner captured the charm of so-called "Third Places" in order to raise awareness about the loss of these spaces and places that are vital for healthy communities. Carmen Mojica has kept a visual diary of the daily life viewed through her car window as she travels to and from work while also paying homage to a great photographer who inspired her work. William Stelzer shows black and white images of a different side of carnival, the subtle tension and work involved in the grand celebration intended to remove us from the concerns of daily life and strife. Gerville Larsen presents an installation that raises issues related to the vanishing architectural landscape and it's relationship to the way we view Virgin Islands culture, history and ourselves. Janet Cook-Rutnik presents a slideshow of digital photographs of a dazzling array of cast off dolls that alludes to the loss of Eden and its inherent innocence.
